Description:

            The Northcoast Environmental Center (NEC) offers a GIS Internship for each semester. The NEC is one of the country’s oldest bioregional environmental organizations and manages several coastal programs, produces a bi-month newspaper and hosts EcoNews Report every Thursday on KHSU.

             The position runs the length of the semester or until job completion. Hours per week will vary, but 30 hours are expected for internship credit. HSU course credit might be available depending on your department offerings, so please consult with your faculty advisor. The work schedule will be on Monday-Thursday, and there is flexibility with other jobs or schedules. Applicant must be an HSU student or have access to the HSU computer lab.

           

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Compile and analyze data from NEC’s coastal programs
  2. Create maps depicting spatial representations of where waste is accumulating on local streets and beaches
  3. Create infographics from data collected from the NEC’s coastal programs
  4. Modify representations to work online and in print
  5. Meet bi-weekly with the NEC Programs Coordinator
  6. Present at the end of the internship to NEC board and staff on accomplishments, lessons learned, and the map-making process
  7. Assist in other NEC events as available

 

Qualifications:

  1. Must be an HSU student to receive internship credit
  2. Ability to remain flexible and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
  3. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  4. Proficiency  using ArcMap
  5. Experience or relevant course work in GIS and remote sensing
  6. Preferred coursework in cartography and experience in Adobe Illustrator
  7. Proficiency in a Mac operating system
  8. Demonstrated skills in writing and communication
  9. Preferred knowledge of conservation and environmental issues, community organizing and activism
