Coastal Cleanup Day began as a local program of the Northcoast Environmental Center in the mid-1970's, and has since grown into the largest volunteer event caring for the marine environment in California and across the world. The success of Coastal Cleanup Day is owed to the participation of our many long-standing site captains and volunteers, our energetic new volunteers that join us each year, and the support of our many community partners including local, national, and international businesses and organizations.
Last year, over 500 Humboldt County residents came out in support of their communities and environment, succeeding in the cleanup of more than 5 tons of trash and recyclables. Statewide, over 57,400 volunteers eliminated a total of 320 tons of trash! These impressive numbers translate to improved water quality for our oceans and waterways, which in turn means healthier human communities, healthier aquatic and coastal ecosystems, happier beach-goers, and safer wildlife that may otherwise have fallen victim to plastics or other debris by ingestion or ensnaring. With your help, we can continue our valuable tradition of cleaning our coasts and waterways, which benefits people, wildlife, and our planet as a whole.
We thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you on the beach!
