What We Do
At
the Northcoast Environmental Center, we educate, activate, and when
necessary litigate on behalf of the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion.
From
its outset in 1971, the NEC has worked to conserve the area's
biological assets in the public's interest. We strive to stimulate
public awareness in securing the future of these natural treasures,
which are vital to sustaining physically, economically and culturally
healthy communities.
We are widely recognized and respected as
a Center for our environmental information and education resources, and
positive, effective action.
Our Mission
To promote understanding of the relations between people and the biosphere and to conserve, protect and celebrate terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems of northern California and southern Oregon.

Four Decades of Achievements
Our nearly four decades of achievement include:
• FOUNDING the oldest rural recycling program in the U.S.
• PIONEERING the now-international “Adopt-a-Beach” coastal clean-up
• SPEARHEADING a 48,000 acre expansion of Redwood National Park; helping to craft legislation that more than doubled its size
• SUPPORTING a successful campaign to decommission the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant
•
PROMOTING the protection of some one million acres as wilderness and
the designation of six regional waterways as Wild and Scenic Rivers
• LITIGATING to protect wildlife, watersheds, rivers, estuaries and fisheries
Our Programs
The Healthy Humboldt Coalition and Green-Wheels, two local non profits working toward environmental sustainability and transportation solutions, are fiscally sponsored programs of the NEC.
Healthy Humboldt is a coalition of public interest organizations working for a County General Plan that provides healthy transportation and housing choices while protecting resource lands and watersheds by focusing future growth in existing communities.

Green Wheels works for a healthier community, economy and environment,
advocating for balanced and sustainable transportation on the North
Coast.
This means transit as a viable alternative to driving for working families, land use planning to make sustainable transportation more cost and time-effective, and bike and pedestrian infrastructure that everyone feels safe using including a Humboldt Bay Trail between Eureka and Arcata.
Green Wheels publishes The Community Wheel on a quarterly basis.
Educating the Next Generation
We are passionate about educating and nurturing the next generation of citizens and environmentalists. As a result, more than 10,000 local students have learned about the importance of healthy watersheds and ecosystems through our Watershed Education Program.

NEC Office Assistant, Kayla Gunderson, at Laurel Tree Learning Center
Our
working diorama of Redwood National Park’s Redwood Creek has traveled
to dozens of schools in the region, and its dramatic presentation
creates interest and enthusiasm in students who might otherwise regard
such topics as either boring or too complex.
It vividly
demonstrates erosion, siltation, flooding, and pollution, and draws a
fascinated response from children who come away empowered to take
immediate action.
Contact us at (707) 822-6918 or nec@yournec.org to schedule a presentation or to borrow the model to use in your classroom.
ECONEWS - Informing the Public
ECONEWS has been pubished monthly for more than 30 years! Currently on a bimonthly publication schedule, ECONEWS has informed and educated the public on environmental since shortly after the founding of the NEC. The newspaper is distributed
internationally to members and other subscribers. While articles focus
primarily on topics affecting the Northern California/Oregon bioregion,
national and international environmental issues and activities are also
included.
Information originally published in ECONEWS has been quoted in other regional and national publications. ECONEWS also serves as a vehicle through which our member groups communicate with their members, and with the larger NEC membership.
Econews Report is a weekly radio broadcast
produced by our staff and aired by KHSU-FM, the local public radio
station. The show airs on Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. PST, and streams online at khsu.org. The program, which includes environmental news, commentary,
and live and taped interviews with journalists, writers, scientists,
legislators, and others engaged in areas of environmental interest to
the public, is the station’s longest running public affairs program. The most recently archived two shows can be downloaded from the KHSU website.
The ideas and views expressed in this site are not necessarily those of the NEC.
