A New Era At NEC

As we usher in a new year and a new era here at the NEC, we are reflecting the attitude of the entire nation: hope and change.

HOPE: More than 400 of you responded to our fall fundraising appeal.  Each contribution, including kind words, filing and yard pruning, in addition to traditional cash donations, will go to support the NEC’s programs as well as our spirits.

So far we have raised $31,261.  That’s more than halfway to our goal for the first quarter! Also, with the helping hands of our volunteers, we’ve spiffed up our yard, organized the garage, rearranged the office, set up a new filing system and best of all, enjoyed spending time with so many of you!

Mark your calendars!  Our 25th Annual Dinner and Auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at the Arcata Community Center. Once again we will showcase fabulous arts and crafts and enjoy a mouth-watering dinner catered by Abruzzi. There’s always the hope that you will walk away with one of your favorite local artist’s creations.

CHANGE: The NEC is truly a center again with several environmentally focused groups working together under the same roof.

Two of our fiscally sponsored programs, Green Wheels and Healthy Humboldt, now have staff on board at the Center. And the Trees Foundation, based in southern Humboldt, has opened an Arcata office here.

It’s a full house, and that’s a winning hand!

As stated in its mission, Green Wheels works for a healthier community, economy and environment. They work to make biking and public transit methods a viable alternative to driving. The Community Wheel newsletter is published quarterly, and available at the NEC. Visit their web site and get to know them better.

Healthy Humboldt came together in 2003 as a joint effort between environmentalists and social  justice advocates to ensure that public health, environmental protection and economic well-being are promoted in the county’s General Plan Update.  Keep informed and involved via their web site.

The Trees Foundation, like the NEC, has many non-profit partner groups. They works to empower these groups by providing, free of charge, technical, financial, administrative and outreach support. Their mission is to leverage the limited resources of our local grassroots organizations that are “striving to restore the ecological integrity of the biologically rich North Coast region.”

This critical mass is quite transformative, and you’ll catch the buzz when you drop by for your next visit to our World Headquarters here in Northtown, Arcata.
