Last December, Congress passed a tax bill that included a provision opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling. This directive is the first time the purpose of a wildlife refuge has been changed to specifically include resource extraction.
Last week, the Trump administration released a Notice of Intent [NOI] to lease land in the Arctic Refuge for oil development, the first step of many in its attempt to move oil drilling forward. The administration is rushing ahead without regard to process or information gathering. However, this NOI does require an opportunity for the public to weigh in on the proposed plan, and during this first public comment period it is critical we come out with a show of force calling for protection of the Arctic Refuge. We have 60 days to show broad and diverse support for protection, and one component of this is a national sign-on letter open to organizations, businesses, faith congregations and community groups.
