A quick summary of process:
During this meeting, the Council will be considering a number of alternatives in the draft ordinance based on the comments City staff received from food-serving businesses. This includes take-out fees/discounts, compliant product types, feasibility, and the implementation timeline. The intent of the meeting is to select alternatives. If Council selects alternatives at the meeting, a first reading of the ordinance will be included. The Council will also be considering alternatives for an additional ordinance that would prohibit single-use plastic beverages at city facilities (city-owned property). After the first reading, a second meeting to adopt the ordinance will be scheduled, which will be an additional opportunity for public comment.
After the approval of a final ordinance, there will be a grace period determined by Council with plenty advance notice before it takes effect.
To show your support and to submit comments, you are encouraged to attend the meeting or provide written comments – via letter or email – prior to the meeting. Contact City Staff with any questions or concerns, and feel free to contact zerowastehumboldt@
