Description:
The Northcoast Environmental Center (NEC) is offering a Coastal Program Internship for the summer. The focus will be on event planning and program organization. The NEC is one of the country’s oldest bioregional environmental organizations and manages several coastal programs, produces a bi-month newspaper and hosts EcoNews Report every Thursday on KHSU.
The internship will be June-September. Hours per week will vary, but 60 hours are required for the duration of the internship and for internship credit. Most work will be done during the week, though some weekends will be expected for outreach events. HSU course credit might be available depending on your department offerings, so please consult with your faculty advisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with planning this year’s Coastal Cleanup (September 21)
- Assist in coordinating Coastal Cleanup Day site captains
- Recruit donations and sponsorships for Coastal Cleanup Day
- Assist in dumpster coordination
- Table at various outreach events, including the North Country Fair and Arts Arcata
- Work as the NEC Site Captain on Coastal Cleanup Day
- Assist in other Coastal Programs such as Adopt-a-Block and Adopt-a-Beach
- Meet weekly with the Office Assistant and Coastal Programs Coordinator
- Present at the end of their internship to NEC board and staff on their accomplishments, lessons learned, and the CCD process
- Follow up with sponsors and send thank-you letters
- Volunteer at the NEC’s Summer BBQ Fundraiser
Qualifications:
- Must be an HSU student to receive internship credit
- Ability to remain flexible and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Availability over the summer and beginning of the school year
- Reliable transportation
- Demonstrated skills in writing and communication
- Preferred knowledge of conservation and environmental issues, community organizing and activism
- Good time management
- Event planning experience
