If you’re like most people, you’ve been calling these guys “dragonflies” your whole life. However, the Tule Bluet (Enallagma carunculatum) is actually a “damselfly”! True dragonflies are much larger, and consider damselflies to be a delicious snack.
Tule Bluets like to live near water, especially where tule reeds are present. They feed on small insects like mosquitoes and mayflies. Like other damselflies and dragonflies, they start their lives as water-dwelling “nymphs” and eventually transform into the beautiful insects you see buzzing around your garden!
