The Varied Thrush (Ixoreus naevius) is synonymous with the redwood forests of Humboldt county. Their simple songs are actually designed to ricochet off the redwood trunks and amplify! These shy birds eat insects in the summer, and berries and seeds in the winter.
While Varied Thrushes are still quite common, they are experiencing a sharp decline mostly due to habitat loss and domestic cats. These birds thrive in mature, biodiverse redwood forests like the ones in Humboldt county.
