For this week’s Debris ID, we’ll take a look at an item familiar to anyone in the mariculture industry: the oyster basket!
Oyster baskets are black plastic mesh cages used to house oysters as they grow. Sometimes you can find one with a buoy attached. If you find an oyster basket, make sure to check for an identifying mark that shows what company it belongs to . If it says “CSC”, it’s a basket from Coast Seafoods. If you find a CSC basket, you’re in luck! CSC baskets can be returned to the company in exchange for a free bag of oysters.
If you’ve seen fisheries and mariculture debris like this on local beaches and want to help address this issue, check out our Trash Trackers program at www.yournec.org/trashtrackers.
