Debris ID: Strapping Bands

If you’ve been taking data during your cleanups using the NOAA Marine Debris Tracker App, you’ve likely come across an item called “Strapping Bands”. Ever wonder what that means? You’re not alone…I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t even sure what they were until quite recently!

Strapping bands are thick black rubber bands, usually 1 inch wide and several inches long. Sometimes a plastic hook is attached, as shown in the picture. They are used to help keep the door to a crab trap closed. If you find one on the beach, you can enter it under the “Fishing/Mariculture/Hunting” category in the Tracker App. If you’d like to learn more about collecting data on the trash you find, visit the link in our bio.
