Debris ID

Happy Wednesday! Welcome to our first installment of Debris ID. Each week we’ll take a look at some of the common trash items on Humboldt beaches and learn how to identify them.

If you’ve done a beach clean before, you may be familiar with the fragments of yellow 3-strand rope and pieces of black plastic pipe seen in this photo. These items are associated with the oyster farming industry and can be found under the “Fishing/Mariculture/Hunting” section in the Debris Tracker App.

Other items to highlight in that section include shotgun wads and shells and bait containers. We’ll be introducing a full photo ID guide soon, so don’t worry if you can’t remember all of these items! If you’ve got photos of debris that you’d like to share, please email them to ivynecmail@gmail.com.
