In good news for wild birds, a California court has ruled that a large, multi-shelter Humane Society violated state laws by abandoning adoptable cats into “community cat” colonies. The award of $500,000 in attorneys’ fees to the plaintiff signals that systemic abandonment can carry serious financial consequences statewide. Saving even a small number of birds by reducing or eliminating cat colonies can perpetuate generations of fledglings, and help ensure the survival of birds we love to watch. There is hope in small steps such as this one.
