Jen Kalt, Humboldt Baykeeper Director

On July 8, English Express students and their families joined us for a kayak tour of Humboldt Bay led by the wonderful guides at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center. Photo by Jasmin Segura.

From April to October, Humboldt Baykeeper offers tours of Humboldt Bay and nearby coastal areas with a wide range of partner organizations, including Centro del Pueblo; English Express, the non-profit English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) school; Community Access Program for Eureka; the Indian Natural Resources, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP) at Cal Poly Humboldt; The Studio & Canvas + Clay, an art program for adults with varying abilities; Humboldt Asian & Pacific Islanders; the County Library summer reading program; and the Humboldt County Transition-Aged Youth Collaboration.

On July 2, we partnered with English Express for a tour of the Humboldt Botanical Garden for ESL students and their families. Photo by MaryAnn Hytken.

This year’s tours were funded by the California Coastal Commission’s WHALE TAIL® Grants Program, the State Coastal Conservancy’s Explore the Coast grant program, and Humboldt Area Foundation. If you know of a community organization interested in Humboldt Bay tours, please contact Jasmin Segura, Bay Tours Coordinator, at jasmin@humboldtbaykeeper.org.

On July 21, Humboldt Baykeeper partnered with CAPE – the Community Access Project for Eureka – to bring underserved families on a tour of the Humboldt Botanical Garden. Special thanks to the Docents who led an educational tour of the gardens, as well as North Coast Co-op and Eureka Natural Foods for providing lunch to the families! Photo provided by CAPE.

Partner Spotlight: CAPE, the Community Access Project for Eureka, is a fantastic program that provides access to a wide range of quality of life activities for all regardless of their living situation or income. This summer, we partnered with CAPE to provide the Humboldt Baykeeper Summer Series for families served by the Betty Chinn Homeless Foundation, Eureka Rescue Mission, and Serenity Inn. Activities included Madaket cruises of Humboldt Bay, tours of the Humboldt Botanical Garden, and nature walks involving bird-watching and watercolor painting. Watercolor painting workshops celebrated the full glorious bloom of summer at Centro del Pueblo’s Jardín Santuario (Sanctuary Garden) in Arcata, a multigenerational, multicultural community gathering space for people immigrating to the United States. Photo by Jasmin Segura.
