Dear Editor,
I just read the News From The Center, in the February issue of the Econews. It was nice to be reminded of Tim’s and Sid’s efforts to protect our environment. I miss those guys. It was also good to be reminded of the years of lousy politicians we’ve suffered through. And the destructive acts they have facilitated.
It doesn’t seem like the “shoring up of our dedication” to the natural world and to each other has been sufficient to control the “executive and legislative works of the last several decades.” We have achieved a number of notable victories but, after 54 years of fighting on an issue by issue basis; we have ended up with a system failure and trump and company at the helm. The good work of the NEC is acknowledged and appreciated but me thinks we (as a nation) need a more strategic and effective approach to fixing our broken and corrupt political system.
The electoral process is driven by money. The politicians are beholden to large donors to get into and stay in office. “We the people” can’t compete with the corporations and tech-bros so, our collective voices are drowned out (see Citizen’s United vs the Federal Election Commission).
I’ve recently become aware of an organization called Represent.us. They are very pragmatic and I encourage all your readers to look them up and listen to the presentation contained in the following link. The long game is in the electoral process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfQij4aQq1k.
In the mean time; carry on the good work of keeping our community informed, connected and safe.
Thanks,
Steve Salzman, Arcata.
